Pressmeddelande -

The Göteborg Opera’s Stephen Langridge appointed new Artistic Director for Glyndebourne

Stephen Langridge, Artistic Director Opera/Drama at the Göteborg Opera, has been appointed new Artistic Director at prestigious Glyndebourne. He will remain at the Göteborg Opera until summer 2019.

Stephen Langridge commented,

"The Göteborg Opera is remarkable in every sense, and I’ve truly loved my five years here. The Glyndebourne assignment is probably the only job that I would even consider leaving the Göteborg Opera for, Stephen Langridge says."

CEO The Göteborg Opera Christina Björklund commented,

"This is a dream come true for Stephen Langridge, and we wish him the very best. Stephen Langridge is passionate about developing the art of opera and about reaching new audiences with high quality musical drama. He’s been in the international limelight for several years, and we congratulate Glyndebourne on their recruitment."

Since Stephen Langridge took office as Artistic Director Opera/drama at the Göteborg Opera in the autumn of 2013, he has directed productions such as Le nozze di Figaro, Hamlet, and Elektra, commissioned new works, and initiated a very active and creative department for participating and learning. In addition to collaborating with highly acclaimed artists and colleagues, he has greatly enhanced the Göteborg Opera’s profile on the European opera scene.

For Gothenburg’s first Ring cycle commencing on 17 November 2019, he has devised an ecologically-sustainable production to explore Wagner’s theme of the exploitation of the earth’s natural resources.

Parallel to his assignment at the Göteborg Opera, Langridge has continued to direct opera internationally; most recently, Carmen in Athens and this autumn, Tristan und Isolde in Hannover.

Stephen Langridge will remain as Artistic Director Opera/Drama at the Göteborg Opera until summer 2019. His original position was to run until end of 2021. During spring 2019, he will divide time between the two opera houses. Langridge will return each year to Gothenburg to continue the Göteborg Opera’s staging of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, following the premiere of Rheingold this autumn.

The recruitment process to find a new Artistic Director Opera/Drama will start immediately. Up until the new Artistic Director takes up the position, the Opera/Drama Department will be managed by Deputy Artistic Director Anders Ottosson and Administrative Manager Opera/Drama Lena Vedin Almung.
