AkzoNobel’s colloidal silica supports cutting-edge applications in China

The AkzoNobel Pulp and Performance Scientific Board hosted a seminar with focus on innovative high performance silica and polymer materials in Shanghai, October 16-17. Dr. Lifeng Li founder and owner of Shanghai based company Excilon New Materials Technology Co Ltd was one of the speakers presenting the development of ceramic coating, one application for AkzoNobel’s colloidal silica products.

The material is manufactured with a high content of colloidal silica, and AkzoNobel Pulp and Performance Chemicals, being the global leader in colloidal silica was the first to enter this market. Excilon is today China’s largest, and one of the world’s leading, manufacturers of ceramic coatings.

“The most well-known use for ceramic coatings is cookware but actually there are many possible applications. We see a great potential for use in the metro systems since the ceramic coating from Excilon greatly improves safety in case of a fire due to it being non-combustible and smokeless,” says Carrie Sun, Regional Sales Manager at AkzoNobel, based in Shanghai.

Mostly, it has been environmental advantages that have driven Dr. Li. As opposed to competing material, the ceramic coating does not release any environmentally damaging gases at high temperatures.

“There is a large potential for this type of coating, the advantages of ceramic coating are not advertised. The potential, however, is tremendous, especially if you consider the improved safety it would bring if more widely used in aluminium curtain wall panels and locomotive interior coating for our metro stations and trains. This year we have supplied to number 1 and number 3 Shenzhen metro lines,” says Dr. Li.

AkzoNobel has an ongoing development project for Excilon with focus on the next generation of products.

“I don’t see AkzoNobel solely as a supplier, if you want to improve your product, you have to learn from others – and I learn a lot when I meet the team from AkzoNobel. They know their material and I know my product. And that’s how I get good suggestions on how the product can be developed and improved,” continues Dr Li.

Colloidal Silica is versatile, inorganic material that can be used in many different industrial applications. To give a few more examples; it is used in surface poilshing, creating nearly defect-free, flat surfaces on silicon semiconductor and sapphire wafers, it is used in coatings, improving hardness and durability as well as improving anti-soiling properties and it is used in the construction industry for increased durability and strength in cementing operations and ground consolidation.
