Land O’Lakes, with around 5.5 billion kg milk per annum and the US’ third largest co-operative, has signed a letter of intent for a merger with three other co-operatives which between them receive a total of 2 billion kg. Over the past year, the four companies have sold liquid milk in the Eastern US through their joint company, Advantage Dairy Group. Advantage will now become a division of Land O’Lakes.
“We’re operating within a rapidly consolidating sector where the question of success or failure is largely determined by the ability to successfully exploit the benefits of largescale operations,” said Robert Shore, the head of the new milk division.
Final proposals for the merger will be announced during the autumn. Members will then be invited to vote on the merger.
