Organic goes national in the UK

Press Release   •   May 02, 2002 15:44 CEST

The surplus of organic milk in the UK has resulted in British retailers introducing a “Buy British” policy for organic products. This, in effect, means that organic production is becoming a purely local affair.

Recently, Tesco, the UK’s largest multiple, announced its decision to apply the “Buy British” principle for basic products like milk and butter in order to support British organic milk producers.

Arla Foods supplies organic milk and butter to Tesco. Organic milk is supplied by Arla Foods’ dairy in Hatfield Peverel, north of London, while organic butter is currently produced in Denmark at Holstebro Dairy. This organic milk production, however, is expected to be transferred to Arla Foods’ dairy in Settle where Arla Foods already produces non-organic butter.

Holstebro Dairy currently produces approx. 75,000 tons butter of which 700 tons is organic butter for the UK market.
