Arla Foods’ functional sweetener, Gaio-tagatose has now been approved by the South Korean authorities.
The decision means that a new, important market is opening up to this low-calorie product.
”South Korea is an advanced market for functional foods and we’re very pleased with the decision from the South Korean authorities,” says Executive Director Henrik Andersen, Arla Foods Ingredients.
Australia and New Zealand are also moving closer to approving the use of Gaio-tagatose in food products. In both countries, the application is currently subject to public hearings and a decision is expected within the next few months.
USA was the first country to approve the new sweetener which is extracted from lactose and the product is now used in US consumer products
Gaio-tagatose looks and tastes like sugar, but contains only one third of the calories. In addition, it does not cause tooth decay.
The sweetener also has a positive effect on the digestion due to its so-called prebiotic effect which stimulates the growth of healthy bacteria.
As Gaio-tagatose does not increase blood sugar, it is also safe for diabetics.
