The sweetener, tagatose, which is extracted from whey, has been approved by the US health authorities.
This follows the approval in the spring of this year by an American independent panel of experts.
By allowing tagatose to be used in food products, the panel granted tagatose GRAS status (Generally Recognised as Safe) and now the approval by the FDA (American Foods and Drug Administration) marks the final stage of the US procedures for approval of new food ingredients.
Arla Foods Ingredients is currently surveying the future market for tagatose and the outcome is expected early next year.
The low calorie Tagatose, for which Arla Foods Ingredients holds exclusive rights for production and marketing, can replace sugar and a number of other sweeteners in certain food products.
