SURREY, B.C. September 17, 2010- Stenberg College presented the annual ‘Student of the Year’ Award at its graduation ceremony held at the Chandos Pattison Auditorium in Surrey. This year’s recipient, Brian Souter, donated his tuition reimbursement award in the amount of $3,025 to the Langley Red Cross, and $3,000 to the BC SPCA.
Stenberg College selects its Student of the Year based on academic excellence, leadership, community service, volunteerism, and campus spirit. Souter, a graduate of the Resident Care Attendant Diploma Program, excels in all five areas. The award for the winning student is typically full tuition reimbursement. As a government funded student, Souter was not eligible for a tuition refund, but was instead able to donate the money to a charity of his choice.
This past summer, the Langley branch of the Red Cross donated a considerable amount of mobility equipment to Souter’s father while he was recovering from surgery. “All this equipment was loaned to him at no charge. Being able to make this donation means a great deal as it will help fund this tremendous program,” stated Souter. Seven years ago, when a good friend of Brian’s passed away, the family requested that all donations go to the BC SPCA. “I couldn’t donate then, but I am making up for it now. It is actually inspiring me to do further charity work and continue to give back to the community,” explained Souter. Accepting the donation on behalf of Souter was CEO of the BC SPCA, Craig Daniell. “This example of leadership and community spirit is very inspiring and the BC SPCA is grateful to Brian for his support,” stated Daniell.
