Orthovisc treatment of osteoarthritis: Safe Option

Press release   •   Mar 19, 2012 05:53 EDT

Orthovisc is a drug which is used in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis mostly occurs in older people due to the degeneration of the joint. Pain is the main symptom of osteoarthritis. When exercise, usual pain medications, and natural treatment no longer provide relief from the knee pain, orthovisc is a good option to treat this pain.

Orthovisc contains high molecular weight hyaluronan. Hyaluronan is similar to the natural lubricant or synovial fluid found in the joints. It is made from ultra pure hyaluronan which is an FDA approved treatment for osteoarthritis. This drug contains a high concentration of hyaluronan. It is a hyaluronate which is used in viscosupplementation which is also used in treatment of osteoarthritis. This drug is indicated when a patient fails to respond to all conservative measures given for osteoarthritis.

Orthovisc is available in the form of intra-articular injections. This injected is generally administered for a period of 4 weeks. Orthovisc intra-articular injection provides relief from knee pain for a maximum duration of 6 months.

Orthovisc works in the joint by restoring the natural synovial fluid which acts as a shock absorber to protect the knee joint. Many patients find relief immediately after the first injection, but the results vary depending on the individual. With the help of viscosupplementation process, this drug addresses the root cause of the pain as opposed to pain management therapy. When compared to other drugs used for osteoarthrits, Orthovisc has many advantages. This drug is derived from the cells of bacteria. It is not obtained from avian sources or rooster combs. This drug is the only available non-avian sourced viscosupplementation injection. Patients with avian allergies such as egg allergy, poultry allergy, and feather allergy can safely use this drug. Orthovisc is a safe treatment option since it matches the properties of the natural synovial fluid in the knee joint.

Orthovisc injection procedure takes just a few minutes and the patients experience very little or no discomfort at all. It is better to inform the physician to inform about the intake of prescription medications, over-the-counter medications, or other dietary supplements prior to the procedure. In this procedure, the injection site is cleaned, prepped, and draped with iodine solution. Local anesthesia is administered to numb the knee joint to avoid any discomfort. Following this, orthovisc injection is injected in the intra-articular region of the knee joint. If the knee joint has excess synovial fluid, it is removed prior to the procedure. There is no need to stay in the hospital after the procedure. Usual activities of daily living can be undergone. The only restriction after an orthovisc injection is to avoid strenous activities that strains the knee such as prolonged standing, intense exercises, heavy lifting, and jogging. Applying icepack to the injection site can help prevent swelling.

All medications have some side effects. Some drugs have minimal side effects while some drugs have harmful side effects. The common side effects of orthovisc injection are pain at the injection site, redness and swelling at the injection site, headaches, back pain, and joint pain. These side effects are temporary, but if the symptoms persist it is better to consult a physician.
