Gelsenkirchen / London 26/02/2013 – “Being awarded with the Engineering, Procurement and Construction contract for the realisation of the three projects has been an important step for abakus to continue our market presence in the UK”, states Roland Wigger, Head of Sales for large scale projects at abakus solar AG. “Together with Low Carbon we are looking forward to build one of the largest portfolios of solar photovoltaic power plants within the UK.” In addition to being responsible for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction of the photovoltaic power (PV) plants, abakus solar shall be providing the related Operations & Maintenance services.

abakus has been active in the UK market for three years and is well prepared to implement the Low Carbon projects in good time. In 2011 abakus installed the 5 MWp PV plant in Swindon in the vicinity of the Westmill Wind Farm, which is regularly referred to as the benchmark project within the PV sector. “The outstanding performance of the photovoltaic power plant we built at Westmill demonstrates our approach of utilising our long standing experience in order to combine highest standards of quality with competitive pricing, leading to superior IRRs for our clients”, explains Roland Wigger.

Low Carbon has funded the development of the four projects by Inazin Power and is providing the construction equity, with the debt being provided by Investec. The projects will generate revenue through the sale of green electricity and the sale of Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) under the UK´s ROC scheme pursuant to which every producer of energy from renewable energy sources receives a defined number of ROCs per MWh produced that can be sold on the market.

“We are thrilled that we will realise the projects together with abakus solar. We were pleased with abakus solar’s build quality on another project that we co-funded in 2011. abakus solar’s strength in execution provided a lot of comfort to us. The projects are on track and we look forward to the projects entering commercial operations later this month and in March 2013,” states John Cole, Chief Investment Officer of Low Carbon.

The total volume of 18 MWp is comprised of three projects with capacities of 7 MWp, 7 MWp and 4 MWp located in Wilmingham (Isle of Wight), Wareham (Dorset) and Shroton (Dorset), respectively. The installation comprises of 74,390 polycrystalline modules manufactured by TrinaSolar and uses the “abakus trapez fix” mounting system. The central inverter solution including the transformers is provided by German based LTi REEnergy GmbH.

“abakus solar will further broaden its engagement in the UK in 2013 as an EPC and O&M contractor for large scale solar power plants and will continue the fruitful relationship with Low Carbon” states Roland Wigger.
