Amazonas vs. Amazon

Amazon would like to use domain names for which the company has applied for its own purposes. So far it has been believed that this should not be a problem with. Amazon. The governments of the two Amazon states of Peru and Brazil have vigorously opposed ICANN against the use of Amazon by Amazon.

The two governments do not want Amazon to use the name of the Amazon for profit interests. "Allow private companies to use geographic names as top-level domains to strengthen their brand position or profit from their importance Making a name does not serve the public interest, in our view, "explains the Brazilian Minister of Science and Technology. The governments of Peru and Brazil urged Amazon to withdraw the application. Brazil stresses that the other members of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty - Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela - also believe that Amazon should not use the top level domain .amazon.

Amazon also wants to get generic names like .book. There is a risk that Amazon claims the term .book on the Internet as a kind of monopoly.

When asked by journalists, what the domain strategy of Amazon looks like, what Amazon intends to do exactly with the domains, Amazon is silent. This seems to be a kind of trade secret that needs to be protected from the public and fellow competitors.

In itself, this problem exists for any company that assures a generic name. This is particularly problematic with the term .book because books still play a role in the formation of political opinion and, of course, a monopoly on such an internet address on a company is always problematic.

An additional problem arises when the company is called "Amazon". Not only are competing stationary booksellers shouting, but many independent critics see a dangerous combination of great market power and monopolization of generic terms. The book domains are just one of the most impressive examples. Among the 76 domains claimed by Amazon are a number of generic domains that Amazon wants to use exclusively for the purposes of its own company. These include the movie-domains, the video-domains, the mobile-domans, the buy-domains, the music-domains, the store-domains, the news-domains, the mail-domains, the cloud-domains, the bot- domains, app-domains, game-domains, search-domains, show-domains, map-domains, song-domains, talk-domains and many more.

Amazon has mostly applied for attractive terms that others have also applied for. It is to be hoped that ICANN will take into account the dangers to the freedom of the Internet posed by too much market power in selecting the qualified candidate. To use a generic term for corporate purposes should be a K.o argument against an application, at least when there are alternative candidates.
