With the title of "Machining in the age of industry 4.0" three teams successfully participated in this year's "Jugend forscht" (Young Researchers) competition. The project was made possible through the cooperation of the Ulm medical technology manufacturer ulrich medical with the South Württemberg Student Research Center. In the end, there was not only a regional win and a second place in the state competition but also a patent application.
The idea of having a trainee work team and students from the South Württemberg Student Research Center work on an extremely challenging topic together and derive several projects from this originated in 2015 at the Baden-Württemberg state competition of Jugend forscht. ulrich medical and its head of production, Dieter Münz, were eager to serve as an industrial partner and mentor. At the end of June 2015, four trainees from ulrich medical and five students from various schools around Ulm began the project "Machining in the age of industry 4.0." Divided into three working groups, the young people, who ranged in age from 12 to 19, enthusiastically got to work. Measurement devices were built, controllers were programmed, mathematical simulations were created and countless trials were performed. And their efforts were rewarded.
The team comprised of Lukas Bohnacker, Marc Engelhardt and Jannik Münz developed a control system which can be used to make production not only faster but also higher in quality and with significantly less tool wear. In addition, the required amount of the costly material hard metal can be reduced by up to 80 percent. This is a discovery which led not only to a regional win in the mathematics/computer science category and a 2nd place win in the state competition in the working world category but also to a patent application.
The two other three-person teams also had notable achievements: Julius Hamich, Jonas Münz and Simon Stückrad won second place in the regional competition in the technology category and the three trainees, Tanja Lechner, Adrian Kunz and Luca Walter, received a special award in the same category.
