Tropical Nutrition is a Danish-company that has taken the Japanese market by storm. The company has become the biggest supplier of coconut oil to the Japanese market. One of the reasons this is possible is that the Japanese demand the high quality that Tropical Nutrition offers. Every week, several cargo ships transport organic coconut oil from the Danish factory in southern Thailand to distribution centres in Japan.

Demand for Tropical Nutrition products has been growing steadily in several countries outside the company’s marketing campaigns. Their clean, cold-pressed virgin oil is 100% organic and practically sells itself. The brand is now regularly distributed to the United States, South America, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Kuwait, and various countries in Europe, including France and the Netherlands. Over the course of two years, Tropical Nutrition has become the biggest supplier of coconut oil in Ireland.

Overwhelming demand and company expansion

– We struggled to keep up with demand at first, but we recently expanded our production capacity by opening a sister factory in Borneo. This factory already produces the same volume of oil as the original facilities in Thailand, states Heini Joensen, the owner and founder of Tropical Nutrition. Joensen is an engineer who has put his eye for quality to good use, developing products for a variety of industries. He has lived in Thailand for 17 years.

– I doubt that anyone can present a coconut oil superior to ours, he continues. By using the best raw materials as well as avoiding additives and heat treatments, we produce the best-tasting coconut oil you could possibly imagine. Our production methods are undeniably reflected in the final product, says Heini Joensen.

Tropical Nutrition was established in the Prachuap Khiri Khan province of southern Thailand in 2001. Heini Joensen has successfully developed a production process that preserves the natural taste of the white meat of the coconut. All coconuts are subjected to testing before being used to make coconut oil. The white meat is extracted, cold-pressed in a screw press, thrown into a series of centrifuges, and treated using vacuum rather than heat. Cheaper equivalent products on the market are often produced using heat treatments, which can result in an off-flavour.

This process is the foundation on which Tropical Nutrition’s success is built.

Uncompromising quality

Within the local community, the family-owned plantations have become coconut suppliers. This shift has created hundreds of jobs as well as education opportunities pertaining to production methods. Experts and buyers from the country and abroad visit on a regular basis. Tropical Nutrition is a certified global organic producer and supplier. Heini Joensen has focused on the same two factors since the beginning: taste and quality.

– Global markets offer a range of coconut oils of varying quality. Our products are not the cheapest on the market, for the simple reason that our goal is to produce oil of the best possible quality. Our oils can be compared to good wine. The grapes have been cultivated with the utmost care every step of the way. We want our customers to receive the best and the taste of our product speaks volumes about its quality. To ensure the continued success of our brand, we carry out weekly taste tests and controls, says Heini Joensen.

In the coming years, Tropical Nutrition plans to expand into the northern European market, focusing on the health industry and large retail chains.

For the most part, the product is sold in private label packaging. The production methods for the coconut oil are flexible with regards to time and volume.
