CLICK Festival 2016 opens with Philip Glass and The Philip Glass Ensemble 20 May 2016

From 20 to 22 May 2016 the old shipyard at the waterfront in Elsinore will be the rustic setting for the sixth edition of CLICK Festival. The opening act will be with one of music history's classic legends; composer, musician and icon Philip Glass. Through his operas, his symphonies, his compositions for his own ensemble, and his wide-ranging collaborations with artists ranging from Twyla Tharp to Allen Ginsberg, Woody Allen to David Bowie, Philip Glass has had an extraordinary impact upon the musical and intellectual life of his times. Friday, May 20 the great old shipyard hall - HAL 14 - will be the stage for the masterpiece Music in Twelve Parts performed by Philip Glass and The Philip Glass Ensemble.

From The Hours to Hal 14

Many will recognize Glass' work from soundtracks for films like Koyaanisqatsi and The Truman Show, which earned him a Golden Globe Award. Furthermore the soundtracks for Kundun, The Hours and Notes on a Scandal landed Glass Oscar nominations for best soundtrack. In the past 25 years however, Glass has composed more than twenty operas, large and small; eight symphonies; two piano concertos and concertos for violin, piano, timpani, and saxophone quartet and orchestra; soundtracks to films ranging from new scores for the stylized classics of Jean Cocteau to Errol Morris’s documentary about former defense secretary Robert McNamara. He has collaborated with Ravi Shankar, Allen Ginsberg, Brian Eno, Leonard Cohen, David Byrne, Aphex Twin and Yo- Yo Ma among many others. He presents lectures, workshops, and solo keyboard performances around the world, and continues to appear regularly with the Philip Glass Ensemble.

"We are at the Culture Yard extremely proud to present Philip Glass and The Philip Glass Ensemble at the CLICK Festival with this unique masterpiece. Glass is an artist and composer who indeed has helped to change the conventional view of what music also can be like", says Georg Rasmussen, festival director, CLICK Festival.

Music in Twelve Parts

Music in Twelve Parts, written by Philip Glass between 1971 and 1974, is a deliberate, encyclopedic compendium of some techniques of repetition the composer had been evolving since the mid 1960s. It holds an important place in Glass's repertory — not only from a historical vantage point (as the longest and most ambitious concert piece for the Philip Glass Ensemble) but from a purely aesthetic standard as well, because Music in Twelve Parts is both a massive theoretical exercise and a deeply engrossing work of art. Music in Twelve Parts is regarded as one of the classical masterpieces of the 20th Century and a cornerstone in classical minimalism.
