Meet the Danes

Get a local’s personal view on Danish cosiness, happiness and life-work balance. A close encounter with the Danes and Danish lifestyle.

Are Danes really the happiest people in the world? How does the Danish royal family manage to be so popular? Why are there so many cycles in Denmark? Why on earth do Danes think it’s safe to leave their babies sleeping in prams on the street while they are in a café? What is that famous Danish liberal-mindedness all about? At the National Museum in the heart of Copenhagen you can now get a unique insider’s view of the Danes, Danish society, and the values that have shaped the country.

Join a free guided tour
Take a guided tour of Denmark’s oldest museum. Your guide is a young Dane who will base your tour on who they are, their family, and their own personal experience. You will hear about the Danish welfare state, Danish ‘hygge’ (cosiness), and maybe discover whether Danes really are the happiest people in the world. The tour you have depends on the guide you meet, so each guided tour is unique. You are welcome to ask all the questions you want to learn everything you need to know about Danish history, lifestyle and culture.

Behind-the-scenes
On the tour you visit a world of doll’s houses, the perfect setting for the story of a small country in the wider world. You get to go right inside a Danish living room, packed with that famous Danish ‘hygge’. You can also look inside the pram Danes feel perfectly comfortable leaving on the streets, baby and all. You get a behind-the-scenes look at ‘the happiest people in the world’ with a genuine hash stall from the free state of Christiania, and can also hear about the vast consumption of anti-depressants in the country. Last but not least, you can hear the story of Nadia Nadim and why she was Dane of the Year in 2017.
