My Talent Journey

For the past six months, I have taken part in Valtech’s International Talent Program 2018. The learning curve has been steep, and I’ve transformed from a newly educated engineer to a full time consultant. I’m sharing my story to encourage other talents to join the program and other companies to offer a similar program, as I truly believe it benefits all parties.

My journey
It all started at Valtech March 1st, a Thursday, where we all met, had our introduction and did some teambuilding exercises. A day of social interaction and good vibes.

Then after two days, at this point a bit overwhelmed by new impressions, we travelled to Paris together. I remember it being a bit ‘frightening’ travelling to a new destination with people that were complete strangers to me. However, already the first day in Paris, we had a lot of fun together – and since then, we have all become good friends.

The week in Paris started with teambuilding and learning a bit about SCRUM, Project Management and UX design. The last days we were divided in our teams. When we joined the talent program, we joined as part of one of these three teams: Adobe Experience Manager (Java), Sitecore (.NET) or Episerver (.NET). I was in the AEM team.

So the last days in Paris, our team had some training in Java and C# with senior developers from Valtech Munich, where we had our first difficult experience.

When we got back to Denmark, trainers from Valtech Paris arrived to teach us AEM. Having very limited prior knowledge of AEM, I drowned in information the first few days – but slowly got a hang of it during the two weeks of intensive training. Now we were ready to start working on our internal talent project. In the beginning, we started building basic components, which then evolved into much more sophisticated components during the program.
The AEM platform is not something you know from school, so throughout the program, we all went from learning the platform from scratch, on to building a decent AEM solution at the end. A great success for us all.

We went to Munich where we again met up with all the other talents, an when we got back to Copenhagen again, we slowly started getting involved in real projects, which meant that the talent project got pulled aside for a bit. However, a few months later we then travelled to Valtech Utrecht, where we, besides having fun together, managed to get a lot done on our project.

The final part of the program was one last trip to Paris, where we should finalize the project and prepare a presentation. The first few days, besides working, we tried to enjoy Paris and spend some time together with our international colleagues. However, for the last days, we had to push hard to be able to show a demo of the project. I don’t really know how, but somehow we managed to have everything ready and had a very good presentation.

In hindsight
Looking back at the trips, I think the best things I got out of it is my new international friendships and the invaluable learnings. It has definitely also been a good experience seeing all of these new cities, cultures and Valtech offices. Though I must admit I lost my heart to the Copenhagen office.

My future
Taking part in Valtech’s International Talent Program 2018 has been a very good decision and opportunity for me. During the six months of training, I have gained a lot of work experience. I have acquired a lot of coding practice, learned how to work in a team and as a consultant. When I started the program, I had the interpretation that I was going to be a back-end developer. However, after finishing the program, I am shifting away from back-end and more into front-end and project management, as I have had the convenience of choosing my own path.

I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to recommend other people to join Valtech’s International Talent Program. It has been a great experience for me and an amazing opportunity to enter the work force, especially if you are newly educated, like I was.

I started as a student and now I’m a consultant at one of the greatest digital agencies globally – what’s not to love.
