Total transports in the Port of Naantali 6.6 million tonnes in 2017

A total of slightly over 6.6 million tonnes of cargo was transported through the Port of Naantali’s quays and water areas (incl. transports to and from the oil refinery) in 2017. The total transport volume (loaded + unloaded) in the port area was down by around 3% compared to the previous year.

The share of the Naantali inner harbour and Luonnonmaa port of the total transports was around 45%, or nearly 3 million tonnes, of which the share of international transports was almost 95%. The cargo volume transported to the said areas of the port was almost exactly the same as a year before. Transports of the Neste oil refinery and oil harbour accounted for 55% of the total transport volume of the Port of Naantali, or around 3.6 million tonnes, which in turn was down by nearly 6% on the previous year. International transports accounted for around 59% of the transports of the oil refinery and domestic for 41%.

The share of international transports was around 75% of the total transport volume in the Naantali port area, totalling 4.97 million tonnes, and the share of domestic transports (including ro-ro traffic between Naantali and Långnäs, Åland islands, and coastal traffic mainly related to distribution of fuel) was 25%, or 1.63 million tonnes. Of the total transport volume, export shipments stood at 1.55 million tonnes and imports at 3.42 million tonnes. Incoming domestic transports totalled around 0.66 million tonnes in the Naantali port area, and outgoing domestic shipments totalled around 0.97 million tonnes.

Vessel calls increased

The number of vessel calls in the Port of Naantali totalled 1,589 in 2017, up by around 6% or 94 vessel calls compared to 2016. The number of vessel calls in the inner harbour and Luonnonmaa was 63 higher and in the oil harbour 31 higher than a year before. The total net tonnage of the vessels decreased, however, by nearly 4% and totalled approximately 9.8 million NT.

The upswing in economy was reflected in unit cargo transports

A total of 133,679 units of trucks, trailers and different other heavy vehicle combinations were transported by ferry through the Port of Naantali, up by 3% on the previous year. Different vehicles arriving in or departing from the Port of Naantali on Roro and Ropax vessels carried nearly 1.92 million tonnes of cargo in 2017, up by around 3% on the previous year. A total of 163,705 people travelled on Ropax vessels via the Port of Naantali, of which 51,674 were leisure passengers.

Dry and liquid bulk cargo decreased

The volume of dry bulk cargo transported via the Port of Naantali in 2017 totalled 0.97 million tonnes, down by 5% on the previous year. Bulk products involve strong fluctuation by year and season – both up and down. In 2017, the fall was mainly due to decrease in the volume of grain transports (-23%) compared to the previous year, when the volume was almost record high. Coal transports to the port were almost at the same level (-2%) as a year before. Of dry bulk goods, the volume increased in animal feeds (+126%), salt (+17%), and cement (+25%) which was transported via the Port of Naantali in greater volume than ever before.

A total of around 3.72 million tonnes of liquid bulk cargo was transported through the Port of Naantali’s quays and water areas in 2017, down by 6% on the previous year. The majority, nearly 97%, of that volume was transport to and from the Naantali oil refinery.
