Streamline your sequencing workflow – NGS with Hamilton
Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) has accelerated genomic research at unprecedented speed. With the growing popularity of benchtop systems such as Illumina MiSeq, Life Technologies IonTorrent PGM and Roche 454 GS Junior, NGS becomes an affordable tool for every genomics lab. Today, sample preparation is not only anymore a bottleneck for high throughput labs but also a key factor when it comes to reproducibility and process safety, even when analyzing only small batches of samples.
HamiltonRobotics and Roche recently introduced a new, integrated system for automated DNA sample enrichment for the Roche 454 GS Junior sequencer workflow. The system is based on Hamilton’s Microlab® NIMBUS NGS workstation with an integrated REM e System from Roche. The platform is fully validated by Roche 454 and automates the emulsion breaking, bead enrichment and sequencing primer annealing steps in the emPCR sample prep workflow. It is designed as a full walkaway solution and replaces almost 4 hours of manual work with 30 minutes of hands-on time, resulting in reduced operator-introduced variability and more consistent results. The small and affordable solution comes with a graphical user interface (GUI) for easy setup and simple control of key parameters, ideally suited for GS Junior System users.
Because of the flexibility of the STAR line platform and Hamilton’s strengths in bringing the right solution to each laboratory, Hamilton also offers solutions for NGS library preparation. For almost every sequencing platform, automated workflows have been implemented. Scientists from academic research, core labs, hospitals, and biotech use the following solutions:
- Illumina TrueSeq DNA and RNA prep
- LifeTech IonTorrent Ampliseq prep
- LifeTech SOLiD fragment library prep
- Agilent SureSelect XT sample prep
There is also growing interest in using alternatives to the kits from the sequencing instrument manufacturers. Many excellent reagents are now available, for example from Bioo Scientific, Kapa Biosystems, Lexogen, New England Biolabs, or NuGen. Hamilton recently started to develop a new flexible and open platform, designed for sample preparation for all NGS protocols from Illumina, LifeTechnologies, and Roche 454. One of the first methods that will be available for the platform is currently developed with of the leading kit providers, and the aim is to provide a solution with the widest range of applications available in the industry. The NGS STARlet workstation is in the last phase of development and will be available in the second half of 2013.
