"Collider" reaches Irish cinemas after being sold to Japan

After being presented at some of the most prestigious European Cinema Festivals in London, Geneva and Galway, "Collider", an Irish sci-fi movie, arrives in Ireland this January 10th.

"Collider" debuted in November in Portuguese cinemas and has just been sold to Japan where it will also be displayed in 2014, is a co-production between Ireland and Portugal and based on a comic book whose action unfolds in Geneva. Inspired by experiments performed at the CERN campus, where scientists found the Higgs Boson and won the Nobel Prize in physics 2013. It is beActive's first foray into the world of science fiction and fantasy; a multiplatform project that encompasses a comic book, one webseries, two smartphone games and all culminates in the feature film. The movie was produced using the Irish section 481 tax incentives and Portuguese fund, FICA.

With the theme of "What would you do if you could go back in time?" "Collider" action takes place in 2018, the year the planet has just collapsed and the human species will be wiped out due to a succession of natural disasters and the emergence a mutant race called the Unknown. In the movie, Peter, Alisha, Carlos, Fiona, Luke and Lucy must join forces to reactivate the Collider to go back in time and prevent the apocalypse. This will not be an easy journey: in less than 24 hours, the time portal will close forever...

Directed by irish helmer Jason Butler (Republic of Telly, The Rubberbandits) and produced by Nuno Bernardo, Triona Campbell and John McDonnell, "Collider" features actors Iain Robertson (Basic Instinct 2, Plunkett & Macleane, The Contractor, Band of Brothers) and Lucy Cudden (Pulp, Judas Ghost Afterlife) in the lead roles. It was written by two-time EMMY nominee Nuno Bernardo ("Final Punishment" and "Beat Girl"). Shooting took place over one month in Ireland, in an old boutique hotel on the outer region of Dublin City where the Ballymore Eustace Water Treatment Works was used to recreate the CERN complex.

Unusual for an independent multiplatform series, "Collider" has over 70 digital visual effects, including reconstructions and scenery scenes entirely on computer generated imagery (CGI). These special effects include the recreation of the CERN campus, the scene with campus flooded tunnels and the design of the creatures that will attack the survivors, called the Unknown.

"Collider" started as a simple idea: Terminator meets Lost. Soon the idea became a transmedia project, starting with the best-selling graphic novel, followed by the YouTube webseries with over 1.5 million views and two mobile games. In 2014, "Collider", the movie, will debut in Ireland (where it was filmed in October 2012), the UK, the USA and also in Japan.
