Sterilization equipment market is expected to foresee significant growth rate during the forecast period 2016 to 2020. The growth is primarily driven by rising incidences of diseases such as cancer and tuberculosis (TB).
Sterilization is a process of decontaminating different equipment and biological culture media. The process ensures the elimination of all forms of micro-organisms including transmissible agents such as spores, bacteria, fungi and viruses. These micro-organisms and transmissible agents are present on the surface of medical instruments, contained in medication, fluid and biological culture media. Sterilization equipment are the devices that are used to perform sterilization process. Medical industry uses sterilization equipment extensively in order to maintain hygienity of medical devices and culture media. The process disables the infectious protein like prions of the micro-organism and hence results in infection free medium/medical devices.
Sterilization process can be performed by the application of heat, radiation, chemical and pressure. Sterilization via application of heat can be achieved via dry heat or steam. In current scenario, the market for dry heat is diminishing and application of steam for sterilizing is gaining market share. Application of various chemicals such as nitrogen dioxide, bleach, ethylene oxide, phthalaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, ozone, formaldehyde, hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid, also enable effective sterilization. These chemical applications are performed in low temperature sterilization equipment. Radiation sterilization uses application of rays such as gamma, ultraviolet, electron beam and X-rays.
Aforementioned processes sometime destroy liquid medium along with micro-organism. Hence, to overcome such situation, filtration sterilization process is performed where the fluids are allowed to pass through very minute pores. These pores (dimension ranges from 20 to 50 nm) do not allow the micro-organisms to pass as the size of these organisms is larger than the pores.
Though the market for sterilization equipment consists of large number of players inclusive of small and large organizations, few players such as STERIS Corporation, Advanced Sterilization Products Services Inc., (J&J), Getinge Group, Synergy Health plc, Belimed AG and 3M Company dominate the market. Launch of innovative and technologically advanced products by these companies enable them gain competitive edge over other players operating in the sterilization equipment market. Furthermore, various merger and acquisition, also support these companies to gain majority of the market share.
The North American market dominates the market for sterilization equipment followed by Europe. North America accounts for the largest share due to presence of large number of sterilization equipment manufacturers coupled with mandate and stringent government regulations for use of sterilization equipment in hospitals and other medical institutes. However, with improving government initiatives and rising disposable income of people in developing nations such as India and China, Asia-Pacific market is considered to be the most promising region for the growth of sterilization market.
Sterilization equipment market is expected to foresee significant growth rate during the forecast period 2016 to 2020. The growth is primarily driven by rising incidences of diseases such as cancer and tuberculosis (TB). The American Cancer Society (ACS) has estimated that by the FY2014, around 1,665,540 new cancer cases have been diagnosed and 585,720 cancer deaths have occurred in the U.S. In addition, rise in number of surgeries and would consequently increase the demand of infection free instruments. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, minimally invasive facial rejuvenation procedures have shown a growth rate of 5% y-o-y in 2013.
Similarly, aging population across the globe is further anticipated to fuel the demand for sterilization equipment as elderly people usually fall sick. This increases their hospital visits coupled with usage of various medical devices to diagnose and treat diseases. This would surely in turn increase the utilization of sterilization equipment to clean the medical devices for their further usage. Additionally, drug preparations require high sterile medium that is likely to augment this market. The growth of sterilization equipment market is likely to hamper owing to shifting trends towards usage of disposable medical devices. Furthermore, currently disinfectors are gaining demand over sterilization equipment reducing the market of sterilization equipment market.
