Nations Seeking to Deploy their own GNSS System

Press Release   •   Feb 06, 2013 14:33 IST

Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is satellite navigation system of satellites that provide autonomous geo-spatial positioning with global coverage. GPS and location data are being woven into most forms of social media, as well. People are now harnessing the power of location - not just for road directions, aviation, and sea navigation - but for finding the nearest restaurant, gas station, and much more. It is fast becoming a part of people’s day-to-day lives, as more smartphones, portable electronic devices, and cars are integrating this technology. Global Positioning System (GPS) technology has developed its applications across various industries such as Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL), tracking systems, navigation, Pedestrian Navigation Systems (PNSs), intelligent transportation Systems etc.

The Galileo system is the most ambitious GPS alternative being developed to date by European Union. Similarly, Russia has chosen to go it alone with its GLONASS system. China is also developing a constellation of more than 30 satellites, to give its COMPASS GNSS a global coverage. Further, India is also hedging its bets in the global navigation satellite systems’ (GNSS) game with its Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). However, Japan's Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) takes a different approach.

According to our research report, “GPS Market Forecast to 2015”, the shipments of GPS devices is growing significantly across the globe and further projected to grow at a CAGR of 15% during 2012-2015.
