Press Release   •   Feb 22, 2016 16:29 IST

India’s apparel and footwear market for kids are estimated to grow substantially in the mid-long term. Overall, the kidswear market makes up approximately 20% of the total apparel market and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.5%. Branded kidswear market is poised to reach over USD 18 billion by 2020. The Indian footwear industry was estimated to be worth INR 385 billion in 2015, of which, Kids footwear comprised 15% of the overall market.

The factors fuelling the growth of the kidswear segment include the high population base of children, the growing exposure of both parents and children towards fashion trends. Furthermore, increasing number of double income parents leading to higher household incomes and, consequently, higher disposable incomes also favored the growth of this segment. Traditionally, the unorganized players which offered a wide range of styles at low prices dominated this market. However, this is gradually giving way to branded clothing becoming the popular option for kidswear. Many domestic and global companies are extending their portfolios, and expanding their geographies, in order to leverage the growth of the kidswear market in India.

Across both boyswear and girlswear, denim remains the fastest growing category. Both children and parents consider denim fabric and style more fashionable as well as wearable. As a result, brands are increasing the share of their denim merchandise in order to tap into this lucrative opportunity. School uniform is another category where growth is expected for both boys and girls, especially with the greater focus on girls’ education. It comprises the largest market share within both segments. Boys’ school uniforms is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 10% while the girls’ school uniforms category is forecasted to grow at 11% in the next 5 years. T-shirts and bottom wear accounted for the second largest market share within the boys segment. While, in the girlswear segment, ethnicwear and dresses dominated the segment.

Unorganized market in the India footwear segment occupies about over75% of the overall market. The organized sector is fast catching up and is expected to grow at an annual growth of over 25% over the next few years. With increasing brand consciousness and rise in personal disposable income amongst the masses and powered by rapid expansion of major organized retails brands including Bata, Liberty, etc, the organized players are rapidly gaining traction.
