Number of investments in the Malmö region higher than Helsinki and Oslo

Press Releases   •   Mar 22, 2017 12:00 GMT

According to a recent mapping of investments made in the Nordics between 2014-2016 the Malmö’s startup community ranks #3 in the number of investments, trailing the two capitals Stockholm and Copenhagen.

The investment numbers compared the region Malmö/Lund/Helsingborg (population: 586 000) with Oslo, Copenhagen, Helsinki/Espoo, and Stockholm - of which Malmö/Lund/Helsingborg has the smallest population.

The Malmö region had a total of 78 investments in 2016, behind Copenhagen with 98 and Stockholm in the lead with 247. The traction in Malmö’s startup ecosystem is often accredited to the “Malmö model”, which is based on having a strong community of entrepreneurs and startups helping each other grow.

“We see the Malmö model in action all the time,” says Jeremie Poirier, co-Head of Malmö Startups. “just last week when Atomico visited, we arranged meetings with several startups, some of whom came back to us with suggestions of more startups the VC firm should meet.”

Most of the investments were made in Health & Wellness and in e-commerce. The health and wellness investments could be partially attributed to the research and health clusters based in Lund. One possible contributor to the e-commerce would be Helsingborg, standing as having the second largest port in Sweden.

The list of investors displayed both regional and national players, but also shows international investors investing in the region, including Sequoia, Atomico, Playfair Capital and more. The region’s community building organisation, Malmö Startups predicts more and larger investments coming in 2017 and beyond.

“We are already seeing a rise in visits from venture capital firms to Malmö this year, partially because our ecosystem had a high number of small investments last year,” says Jeremie Poirier, co-Head at Malmö Startups.

“This means that within 12-18 months from now, those funded startups will be raising their next round of investment, so VC firms that come to the region this year will be in on potentially great deals.”

The mapping was initiated by the regional investment promotion agency Invest in Skåne and Malmö Startups, analytics were provided by the Nordic Web.

Major investment for connected health in the Nordics gets green light

Press Releases   •   Dec 09, 2016 16:10 GMT

Lund, 9 December, 2016: New Industry Accelerator, an employment venture run by Region Skåne and a number of regional actors across the Nordics, receive 5.1 MEUR in funding by the EU programme Interreg. The aim is to help more than 100 Nordic start-up companies to grow and to create at least 700 new jobs within the field of connected health. Twenty companies are expected to become international fast-growers with the help of the accelerator programme.

”We are witnessing the birth of a new industry that connects the strong know-how within IT, mobile technology and life science that the Nordics are famous for,” says Marianne Larsson, head of innovation at Innovation Skåne. ”We can now intensify our work and collaborate with our Nordic partners to contribute to strong new businesses that can improve life and health. New methods are required to increase the number of internationally successful start-ups. We have seen several examples of brilliant businesses from our region that have been overtaken by start-ups from other countries; businesses with a strong domestic market, expertise and venture capital, and our aim is to change this. This is the starting point for the project.”

The New Industry Accelerator venture opens up the Nordic market, strengthening the test and development opportunities for connected health start-ups in the entire region. The initiative brings together companies from across the Nordics, creating a critical mass that makes the region internationally competitive.

”The New Industry Accelerator gives us a fantastic opportunity to find and bring together the best projects in the Nordics. We’re creating a Champions League for accelerators, where we combine different knowledge from different markets in order to help businesses grow faster, both regionally and internationally,” says Morten Mølgaard Jensen, CEO at Cobis.

The funding will benefit business and government agencies in Sweden, Denmark and Norway.

The partners behind New Industry Accelerator: Innovation Skåne heads up the New Industry Accelerator venture together with Oslo Medtech in Norway, Cobis in Denmark and Sahlgrenska Science ParkSmile Incubator and Invest in Skåne in Sweden. The partnership is an extension of the Nordic Connected Health Star Track project.
