Nobel Prize winner in Physics to speak at The Bridge Summit in Lund June 22-23, 2016

Press Release   •   Feb 16, 2016 11:30 GMT

The Bridge Summit 2016 is a conference about life and materials science, with the ambition of pushing humanity forward to solve global challenges by strengthening the link between science and business. The list of speakers attending the conference already includes several renowned experts and entrepreneurs. Now, a Nobel Prize winner is added to the list.

“We are very proud to be able to offer attendees the possibility to listen to pioneering scientist, Professor Konstantin Novoselov.” says Stefan Johansson, Managing Director, Invest in Skåne.

Professor Konstantin Novoselov, along with Andre Geim, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010. They received the prize for their research on the revolutionary new material, graphene. Graphene is a "two-dimensional" material (only one atomic layer thick). It is a hundred times stronger than steel and an excellent conductor of both heat and electricity. The material is considered to have unexplored applications in areas such as electronics, aeronautics, and medicine.

"Graphene holds great promises in providing new technology for some of the global key challenges addressed in this meeting. It could potentially be used for providing clean fresh water by efficient desalination of sea water and it could potentially replace scarce raw materials in electronics applications." says Patrik Carlsson, Director for the Graphene Centre at Chalmers.

"For Chalmers, having graphene research and innovation is one of its top priorities, this meeting is an excellent opportunity to discuss how we can best make a positive impact in the world. Can we create innovations and new business opportunities based on research at MAX IV and ESS? Professor Novoselov will no doubt add to the quality and perspective of the discussion.”

Other speakers at The Bridge Summit 2016

Åsa Skogström Feldt, president of The Hunger Project, Rajendra Singh, winner of the Stockholm Water Prize in 2015, and Sudhvir Singh, Policy Director at EAT foundation are already secured as keynote speakers. Now two more distinguished speakers join the line-up:

Michael Braungart, CEO and founder of EPEA (Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency), an international research and consulting institute based in Hamburg. The Institute is behind the Cradle to Cradle concept that covers entire product value chains - from raw materials to recycling of the product. www.epea.com

Ulrica Edlund, Associate Professor at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Ulrica works with the design of renewable materials from land-based and marine biomass, such as forest biomass, algae and agricultural residues.

The Bridge Summit is an initiative of Invest in Skåne and Medicon Village, in cooperation with the advanced research facilities MAX IV and European Spallation Source (ESS), the Capital Region of Denmark (Copenhagen), the City of Lund, the City of Malmö, Science Village and Colloidal Resources.
