WORLD PREMIERE FOR KASTHALL DESIGN COLLABORATION WITH ILSE CRAWFORD

Press Releases   •   Apr 22, 2018 17:53 GMT

At the Salone del Mobile in Milan last week, Kasthall launched its design collaboration with the British designer Ilse Crawford. The collection, called Grönska, consists of two tufted and three woven rugs. Crawford drew inspiration for Grönska from the Swedish landscape around the Kasthall factory in Kinna, Västergötland.

Since it was founded in 1889, the international design brand Kasthall and its factory have been located in the little town of Kinna. When Ilse Crawford visited the factory for the first time and saw the surrounding meadows and fields, she was inspired to create Grönska. The collection was developed both as a tribute to the life, colours, patterns and textures of the Swedish landscape, and to address the general desire to bring more green into our interiors.

“The factory feels very connected to the surrounding fields and farmland, so designing a collection of rugs that reflects such an important part of Kasthall’s identity and history was a natural step. Like Kasthall’s carpets it’s a landscape made by humans and their machines” says Ilse Crawford. “And what’s more, in all our work these days, we see a cultural shift towards greener architecture and interiors. We live most of our lives indoors, so a physical connection to nature inside is important. The colour green brings a sense of life to our interiors, has a positive impact on our health and in the right shades is perceived as neutral.”

The design collaboration, which began in spring 2017, consists of three woven rugs, Fåra, Glänta and Ängsmark, as well as the hand-tufted rugs Täppa and Åker. Crawford and her team, in collaboration with Kasthall Design Studio, explored different weaving and tufting techniques in order to reflect the rythm, irregularity, and diverse tones of the different types of landscapes throughout the year. These qualities are infused into the rugs – and in turn into the homes and public spaces where we live and spend time. Developing the right greens was a challenge. For example Kasthall Design Studio together with Crawford and her team started experimenting with a new dyeing method for melange hair yarn. It was important to make sure that dynamic, natural colour shifts in the wool shone through. The result was a yarn with new depths. This yarn is an important component of two of the new rugs, the woven rug Ängsmark and the tufted rug Åker.

“Ilse Crawford is a world-leading designer and entering into a design collaboration with her has felt spot on throughout the design process. Ilse shares the same values of sustainable, long-lasting design as Kasthall and furthermore she understands our Scandinavian design and cultural heritage. We are also proud that the Grönska collection pays tribute to the very place where we have been located since 1889,” says Lena Jiseborn, Design Director, Kasthall.

The Grönska collection will be displayed in a retrospective exhibition of Studioilse furniture at the Kasthall showroom in Brera during the Milan Design Week. The exhibition will remain until end of May.

While Kasthall’s customers are found all over the world, each rug crafted by the international brand is custom made in Kinna. Kasthall does not keep stocks of rugs and they are not transported to and sold in shops. In this way, unnecessary consumption of materials, dyes, resources, energy and transportation are kept at a minimum. All rugs in the Grönska collection will be part of Kasthall’s permanent collection, except for the rug Åker, which is being produced in a limited edition of 50 rugs in total.

Kasthall has been designing and manufacturing unique woven and hand-tufted rugs since 1889. Our own factory is located since in Kinna, amid the traditional textile area in western Sweden, where the production still occurs. Over the years, Kasthall has become one of the world leaders in the design and manufacture of carpets, and is now represented in 30 countries with a showroom in Stockholm, Milan and New York. Part of the secret is that we own our own production and thus control the entire manufacturing process. Another is our consistent focus on design and development.

UNIQUE NEW WOOL YARN BEHIND LATEST KASTHALL ORIGINALS - KATJA AND FREYJA

Press Releases   •   Feb 14, 2018 20:22 GMT

Kasthall stumbled over the new wool around three years ago – which with its unique, wavy character awakened the design studio’s interest. At that time, there was no immediate plan for how to use the wool, which has since then been stored at the Kasthall factory in Kinna. When designer Maja Johansson Starander started working on the Legacy of Tomorrow collection, the wool popped up in her mind.

Kasthall has incorporated the wool in di erent ways into both new rugs. Inspired by fashion designer Katja of Sweden’s 60/70s patterns, the idea for Katja’s wavy, graphic pattern was born. The wool is unusually voluminous, facilitating the creation of Katja’s curly, undulating surface. Indeed, this unique surface inspired the Kasthall Design Studio to create a sister rug, Freyja. In Katja, the wool is tufted in di erent blunt cut heights, creating a mischievous, graphic pattern. In Freyja, an uncut bouclé tufting in combination with the unique qualities of the new wool, create an irregular, ru ed surface, bringing to mind moss and soil.

KATJA
Katja is a rustic wool rug in which the pile is cut in two different heights to create an abstract, organic pattern. The raw texture of the rug and pattern, bring to mind exclusive garments that have fallen on the floor. Kasthall Design Studio has dyed the wool in soft nature tones, and the wool’s natural characteristics lead to interesting shifts in colour. The colour contrast in the wool also gives the rug an exciting depth. The short end of the rug has a minimalistic yet detailed edge, like the ribbing on a knitted garment. The inspiration for Katja’s elegant, light colour palette comes from the world of fashion.

PRODUCT INFORMATION KATJA

Material: Hand-tufted rug in 100% wool

Colors: Cloudy Grey 500, Pale Violet Grey 610 och Wheat 800

FREYJA

When designer Maja Johansson Starander designed the hand-tufted rug Freyja, she was inspired by the landscape and nature of Iceland, with its characteristic elements of moss and lava, along with stone, soil and minerals. Inspiration from nature is also seen in the rug’s somewhat darker colour palette. Freyja’s irregular surface is framed with a glossy accent edging in hair yarn/linen, adding a lovely contrast to the softness of the tufted wool. The accented edge also makes the rug feel more squarelike in shape.

PRODUCT INFORMATION FREYJA

Material: Hand-tufted in 100 % wool with an irregular bouclé surface and an accent edge in hair wool/linen

GABRIELLE – A DECLARATION OF LOVE TO CRAFTSMANSHIP

Press Releases   •   Feb 14, 2018 20:05 GMT

The soul and curiosity of craftsmanship has been given free rein in Gabrielle. Inspiration for the design was drawn from vintage textiles with carefully crafted details, embroidery in particular. Visible warp threads create irregular vertical stripes giving a sense of asymmetry. Gabrielle was also designed with accent colours that adorn the surface in the form of thin lines. The colours were selected to provide a contrast and strengthen the playfulness in the structure and crisscross pattern of the rug.

GABRIELLE
Gabrielle was designed by Maja Johansson Starander, designer at the Kasthall Design Studio. This woven bouclé rug is made of linen yarn with elements of wool yarn. The rug has novel proportions, presented as a squarer, slightly asymmetric rug in three unique patterns and colour schemes.

PRODUCT INFORMATION GABRIELLE

Material: Linen & wool

Colors: Cinnamon 770, Gold 750 och Mint 250

DIAMOND – TOMORROW’S DESIGN LEGACY TODAY

Press Releases   •   Feb 14, 2018 19:57 GMT

In Legacy of Tomorrow, the theme of the 2018 collection, Kasthall began a dialogue between the past and future of the company, in which a love of textile history and natural materials have been guiding lights. With the ambition to craft beautiful rugs in high-quality material in an array of sophisticated colors, Kasthall has created a collection that calls upon the viewer to experience tomorrow’s legacy today. The resulting collection has an artistic simplicity that challenges earlier production methods.

Drawing inspiration from exclusive embroidery and haute couture, the new hand-tufted Diamond rug is handcrafted in wool and linen. Lines and tuft stitching in contrasting colours are imbedded in a structured surface of cut pile and bouclé loops. Like a mirror image, the line play breaks up the underlying pattern, creating an air of elegance and precision.

DIAMOND
Diamond is a hand-tufted rug with an abstract pattern that draws inspiration from haute couture. Designer Maja Johansson Starander at the Kasthall Design Studio, in collaboration with product developers, sketched and experimented on the tuft weave itself. The aesthetic expression has slowly emerged as a part of this creative experiment.
