The UK entry, ‘Children of the Universe’, underwhelmed despite hopes it could gain traction. But while Molly only placed seventeenth in the end, her opening lines of ‘power to the people’ was part of story. In fact, people power was only half of the story, which is why there is controversy.
The way the scoring works is that the final points awarded by each country are weighted equally between a public vote and an expert panel. That may seem fair at first glance, but it can produce surprising results.
A few places ahead of the UK was Poland, whose song ‘My Słowianie’ or ‘We are Slavic’ featured milk churners and women in traditional-yet-revealing dress. On the night, 14th place was nothing to note.
