In China, the nation's biggest political event of the year kicked off as the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) opened at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Sunday afternoon. Senior officials reported on the work of the last years as fresh faces and voices joined the country's top political advisory body.
The opening ceremony was attended by outgoing President of China Hu Jintao and newly-elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Xi Jinping and preceded by the Chinese national anthem.
Yu Zhengsheng presided over the opening ceremony.
