China's Yutu suffers problem as lunar night descends

Xinhua reported on January 245 that the rover, known as Yutu in Chinese, has suffered a “mechanical control abnormality, and scientists are organizing repairs.”

China’s State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence (SASTIND) blamed the problem on the "complicated lunar surface environment," but there is little sense of the seriousness of the issue, or what can be done to fix the situation.

The abnormality was reported shortly before Yutu went to ‘sleep’ for the two-Earth-week-long lunar night, during which it will experience temperatures of around -180 degrees Celsius.
