Energy and development top the agenda in the Caribbean

Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Foreign Affairs,Winston Dookeran reiterated his government’s commitment to the ‘one China policy,’ and promised that continued trade agreements and new partnerships within the energy sector would go far beyond strengthening the bond between the two countries.

“I think the visit of the president of China is not only of a bilateral nature,” said MrDookeran. “It’s of a global nature, and by extension Trinidad and Tobago are placed in the golden spotlight, allowing us to develop a new kind of economic diplomacy in the future.”

Long held bilateral relations have certainly kept a healthy development trend going, but according to Dookeran energy is the new focus. “China has a credible presence in the energy sector and have been an equity participant in Atlantic LNG. We in Trinidad and Tobago have been developing what you call the new African initiative where we are trying to access opportunities in the energy sectors because Africa has now become attractive as a country for investment.”
