“All the volunteer opportunities that I found were either avoluntourism opportunity or a job where you, in order to get experience on the ground, needed an advanced degree. So there seemed to be this wall in front of me: either I had to pay a lot to go volunteer somewhere or I had to go get a master's degree in order to ever hope to be part of an organization where I would get to do work on the ground,” she remembers.
