Li in Africa: A significant visit

This is surprising considering the proportion of China’s trade that Africa accounts for, but from more ideologically-fuelled interactions in the post-war era and the need for backing in the United Nations, to a recent decade that has seen an explosion in trade, Africa has long been important to China.
Reactions to this burgeoning relationship have been highly polarized, politicized and misleading, but its importance is not in doubt, nor is the fact that the recent period of Chinese engagement as part of its ‘going out’ strategy has coincided with sharp growth in Africa.
