Looming North Korean nuclear test poses tough questions for US, China and the world

With a third nuclear test by North Korea appears to be imminent, the United Nations, China and the United States face serious questions as to how to best deal with an escalating situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Following UN sanctions imposed for the December 12 rocket launch, US and South Korean intelligence have noted increased activity at the nuclear test site at Punggye-ri, with the latter party claiming a third nuclear blast is imminent.

Pyongyang on Saturday warned of "deadly retaliation" to the tightening of UN sanctions through Security Council resolution 2087, North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said. KCNA also reported that leader Kim Jong Un recently made a "historic speech" and discussed a "great turn" in military capability.
