The Sochi Olympics media circus is unfair on Russians

The first impression is that media coverage in the run-up to the Sochi Olympics has become exceptional and distorted. Any isolated incident seems to conflate the Games with the Russian people.

Following the early efforts of respected writer Stephen Fry, the Olympics in Sochi have every chance to remain in the history as the Gay Games. His open letter to David Cameron, Jacques Rogge and Lord Coe in August about the Olympics and the treatment of the LGBT community in Russia stated: “An absolute ban on the Russian Winter Olympics of 2014 on Sochi is simply essential.” The circle was closed when three months later actor Hugh Laurie supported his close colleague, calling instead for a boycott on Russian vodka.
