In their May 2014 issues, both Belgian magazine “Test-Aankoop/Test-Achats” (Test Buy) and Dutch magazine “Consumentengids” (Consumer Guide), published a review of rear mounted bike carriers. The Thule EasyFold and Thule EuroPower did not score as high as we are used to see when it comes to tests of Thule products. Thule would like to share its analysis of the tests.

Thule is a premium brand, globally known for its smart solutions that are safe and easy to use. We have among the broadest range of carriers, and the most innovative bike carriers in the market. The Thule EasyFold and Thule EuroPower are no exceptions.

Both Thule bike carriers are very safe and cleverly designed bike carriers with a number of innovative features that we don’t think Test-Aankoop/Test-Achats nor Consumentengids has valued to the full potential. Examples are design, how easy it is to fold and unfold the EasyFold, the 5 year product warranty, that the covered wings of the Thule EasyFold protect the engines of e-bikes from road dirt, the new Thule AcuTight torque limiter knobs etc. These are all benefits that the test in Test-Aankoop/Test-Achats and Consumentenbond did not take into account.

This is partly due to the fact that the Consumentengids test was based on the Test-Aankoop/Test-Achats test, combined with results of a 2012 Consumentengids test of bike carriers. Since 2012 Thule has improved certain features of both the Thule EasyFold and Thule EuroPower carriers to make them even more user-friendly. Furthermore the test details sheet shows there is information missing in the test results; information such as our 5 year warranty as well as certain accessories. Also the wrong dimensions of the carriers were used to evaluate the carrier.

Thule is talking to both organizations on their testing methodology. We are convinced that consumers’ interests could be better served by tests which conform to European regulations and standardized methodology. This is also the kind of test that Thule conducts on its new products. In our testing we focus on functionality, durability and safety.

Both these bike carriers have passed all Thule´s internal and external testing, meeting all requirements and standards (e.g. City Crash test, TÜV durability tests etc). These tests meet and surpass the tests performed in both Test-Aankoop/Test-Achats and Consumentenbond. Also, the fact that the weighting and scoring is subjective, calls for independent testing in line with European regulations and standards. Only so can all manufacturers’ products be evaluated on a level playing field, excluding editors’ opinions and feelings. This would greatly benefit consumer awareness and knowledge level of what to look for in a safe bike carrier.
