May 23 the Norwegian ambassador to the United Kingdom Mona Juul hosted a mini seminar on the Arctic Ocean in London. The seminar took place in the Norwegian Embassy, Ambassador's Residence.The event was part of the outreach program of the Pan-Arctic conference Arctic Frontiers which is arranged annually in Tromsø, Norway. During the seminar eight experts presented different aspects of environmental change and prospects for sustainable business development in the Arctic. Strategy Director in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Leiv Lunde, presented under the title «The Arctic Ocean Space in Times of Rapid Change». The themes for the other presentations were climate change, Arctic shipping, the balance between protection and utilization of Arctic natural resources and business development prospects. Liv Monica Stubholt from the Norwegian Lawfirm Selmer presented the regulatory framework for Arctic operations, Kjersti Lie Gabrielsen from Marbank described the biological diversity in the Arctic and the potential for identifying medical substances and Director of the Arctic Economic Council Secretariat, Anu Fredrikson, informed about the work of the council.
The event was visited by 30 British guests including scientists, representatives from the Natural Environment Research Council, British Antarctic Survey, think-thanks, journalists, parliamentarians, businesses, IMOs Maritime Safety Division, Foreign Office of the Ministry of Defense and the Department of Energy and Climate Change. Stephen Sackur, from BBCs Hard Talk also participated in the seminar.
The General Director of Arctic Frontiers, Ole Øvretveit, ended the day by inviting more British delegates to the next edition of the conference titled «White Space – Blue Future», January 22.-27. 2017.
