We are very happy that Dr. Dmitry Shparo will speak at the Opening Ceremony of Arctic Frontiers 2017. Mr. Shparo holds a Ph.D. in mathematics and is the Director of the Adventure Club. Dmitry Shparo is known as the leader of the first in history Ski Expedition from the Continent to the North Pole (1979). This achievement of Dmitry Shparo was recorded in the London Guinness Book of World Records. In 1988 The Soviet-Canadian Expedition under the leadership of Dmitry Shparo crossed the Arctic Ocean along the route: Russia-North Pole-Canada. In 1998 Dmitry Shparo together with his son Matvey Shparo became the first people in history, who crossed on ski the Bering Strait, dividing Asia and America. This achievement of Dmitry and Matvey Shparo was recorded in the London Guinness Book of World Records. In 2007-2008 the Adventure Club organized the unprecedented Expedition: Matvey Shparo and Boris Smolin travelled from the Continent to the North Pole during the polar night – they started on December 22, 2007 and arrived at the North pole on March 15, 2008.

Starting from 1991 one of the foreground tasks of the Adventure Club, founded by Dmitry Shparo, is the rehabilitation of people with various disabilities. In 2000 the Adventure Club organized the Ski Expedition across Greenland, the team included one sportsman with disability, who used a wheel chair in his everyday life. In 2002 the similar team (two disabled sportsmen with spinal cord injury) made an ascent to the summit of Mt. McKinley.
