Pledging conference good start, but needs are overwhelming

“With the funding raised at the donor conference today, we can help a lot of people. This is a good start, but the needs in South Sudan are overwhelming and more funding is needed”, said Liv Tørres, Secretary General at Norwegian People's Aid.

Norwegian People's Aid congratulates Foreign Minister Børge Brende and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on their efforts in organizing the South Sudan Humanitarian Conference in Oslo Tuesday.

“Norway has done a fantastic job of organizing the conference, and has made a generous contribution to the humanitarian efforts in South Sudan. We wish more states had pledged similar amounts”, said Tørres.

A total of USD 600 million was pledged in humanitarian aid to South Sudan to avert what might become the worst famine in Africa in 30 years.

“This funding must be made available to humanitarian organizations immediately. We have no time to loose in distributing food to internally displaced people” said Tørres.

In South Sudan, one million people are internally displaced, 300,000 have fled to neighboring countries and over 4 million people are in need of emergency aid. There is a great risk that this number will double in the next few months.

Norwegian People’s Aid is one of the largest humanitarian organizations in South Sudan, and have worked in the country for almost 30 years. On Humanitarian Aid NPA in partnership with WFP has so far distributed 1,122mt of food to 89,061 IDPs in Lakes State, Upper Nile State, Jonglei State and Central Equatoria State.
