Europe’s fastest broad band modem tested in Norway

Pressemelding   •   jun 28, 2013 13:16 CEST

While Norwegians expect continuously higher broad band speeds, Get tests a new super modem on its hybrid fiber network which could potentially provide customers with broad band speeds 60 times faster than what is available in Norway today.

- We are the first company in Europe to test Eurodocsis 3.0 modem with these speeds. The new super modem can provide broad band speeds up to 1 Gbps, says Gunnar Evensen, CEO at Get.

There are almost 1 800 000 private broad band subscriptions with fixed access points to the internet in Norway. Among these, the average speed is 16,5 Mbps. The band width requirement in Norway increases by approximately 50 percent each year, and great investments are needed in both network and infrastructure in the years to come to be able to deliver this.

To make new speeds accessible to everyone connected to a hybrid fiber network, Get is now testing Cisco’s latest ultra high speed data gateway. The goal is to give Norwegian households the best broad band in Europe.

The internet speed of 1 Gbps is the capacity customers can use for surfing and streaming. In addition, all of Get’s customers have access to 200 simultaneous digital tv-channels and movie rentals with more than 5000 movies available.

FACTS

Eurodocsis 3.0
Today’s standard for transmission of internet through hybrid fiber network. For the first time in Europe, Get is this week testing a Data Gateway from Cisco that can deliver 1 Gbps.

Eurodocsis 3.1
Sometime this year, the next generation of broad band standard will be made public. Expected delivery capacity is a total 10 Gbps and is expected to be ready during 2015.

Hybrid fiber
Hybrid fiber technology is one of the most widespread technologies in the world. The technology combines fiber and coaxial cable, and can in theory provide each customer with up to 10 Gbps (10000 Mbps) capacity from each home access point. This is close to 400 times faster than traditional ADSL broad band and between 10 and 100 times faster than the Ethernet cable delivered through regular fiber broad band.

Cisco High Speed Data Gateways
Cisco is continuing to help Service Providers increase their broad band access speeds with their latest ultra high speed gateways.  These gateways can deliver up to 1 Gbps download streams along with improved wifi coverage.  These technologies allow the customer to benefit from not only multiple HD video streams but faster video streaming in the home.
