8 ways we can help soldiers and scientists get more from what they already have

What is it really that soldiers, marines, sailors, pilots or scientists need to do their jobs safely or effectively? As vehicles, aircraft and other platforms become more expensive, and the process of replacing them ever more challenging, we believe they need to get more performance out of what they already have. Today we are presenting 8 ways that we can help provide just that.

In our everyday lives we are often faced with the dilemma of whether we should try to improve on what we already have, or to get something completely new. It could be our homes, our cars or the tools that we use to do our work. Given how quickly technology is moving, we frequently go for the easy option, and get something new. After all, why spend money on upgrading one part of something when replacing the whole thing isn’t that much more expensive?

To the people we support, however, the easy option isn’t always available. It can take years, if not decades between each time a branch of the military or a space agency develops and buys a new vehicle, ship or a space launcher, and the process of buying these “major platforms” is constantly getting more complex and expensive. As a result, they are increasingly forced to look for ways of getting more from what they already have, and are asking companies like Nammo for help to do so.

In this year’s edition of the Nammo bulletIN we are highlighting 8 examples of how we believe we can help our customers get more from these existing systems and designs.

For instance, you can read about how two weapon systems, each with more than a half century of service life, are getting a completely new capability thanks to our programmable ammunition technology. Then learn more about the ammunition that both the US Navy and the US Army have chosen on to help their existing 30 mm guns punch through armor - both at sea and on land. You can also read about how a new version of the European space launcher Vega will use our propulsion technology to replace extremely toxic fuels with a zero emissions system. And for something slightly more futuristic, read about how we are working to double the range of the artillery guns land forces have today, by putting ramjet engines inside artillery shells - allowing them to fire accurately at ranges out to 100 km or more - at a price lower than today’s precision guided ammunition.

While the main focus remains on technologies, we also include four articles at the end of the magazine in an “insight” section highlighting four Nammo-companies that have joined us during our 20 year history. Through their unique backgrounds, each have helped us become what we are today.
