The Vienna Philharmonic and Sony Classical renew their partnership

Vienna – December 1st, 2015. At a joint press conference in Vienna, Sony Classical and the Vienna Philharmonic announced a long-term extension of their existing partnership. The contract, which was signed yesterday in Vienna, means that they will continue to work together closely, more especially on the worldwide release and marketing of the orchestra’s New Year’s Concert in all of its physical and digital formats.

There are few concerts that generate as much international interest as the New Year’s Concert from Vienna. Under the direction of some of today’s leading conductors the orchestra rings in the New Year with a gala concert that is broadcast to more than ninety countries all over the world from the magnificent setting of the Golden Hall at the Vienna Musikverein and is watched by over fifty million viewers across the globe. The 2016 New Year’s Concert will be conducted by the Latvian maestro Mariss Jansons, who is returning to the podium after earlier appearances at the New Year’s Concerts in 2006 and 2012.

This year also marks the seventy-fifth anniversary of the first such concert. To celebrate the occasion Sony Classical is releasing a jubilee edition, The New Year’s Concert: The Complete Works. The set comprises twenty-three CDs featuring each of the 319 works that have been performed at a New Year’s Concert. Among them are 25 previously unreleased recordings from the archives of Austrian national public service broadcaster (ORF), the organisation that has recorded the concert since 1961. The Edition also includes a very special CD of 13 brand-new recordings of works, capturing music from the concert’s early years but not recorded at the time. The partnership between Sony Classical and the Vienna Philharmonic is part of a great tradition – among earlier releases on the Sony label are the legendary New Year’s Concerts conducted by Herbert von Karajan in 1987 and by Carlos Kleiber in 1989 and in 1992.

Commenting on Sony Classical’s renewal of its contract with the Vienna Philharmonic, the orchestra’s chairman, Andreas Großbauer, has said that“We are delighted to have found in Sony Classical a reliable and well-qualified partner in the recorded music market and look forward to working with them on future joint releases.”

Bogdan Roscic, President Sony Classical, added: “Working with the Vienna Philharmonic is one of Sony Classical’s most exciting long-term projects. And it now includes a special milestone in the form of the recently released edition of all the works that have ever been performed at a New Year’s Concert. For both of us, it was a great challenge in terms of the research involved and the production of this big release as we traced the history of the world's most famous orchestral concert, including a spectacular new recording of all those pieces that had probably never been captured on tape. I am very much looking forward to further joint ideas and products as well as to the continuation of our work on the New Year’s Concert.”
