After 17 years as the CEO of Norwegian Air Shuttle, Bjørn Kjos (72) will leave the position and continue in a new role as an advisor to the Chairman, with effect from July 11th. Until Norwegian appoints a new CEO, CFO Geir Karlsen (54) will act as interim CEO, while Chairman Niels Smedegaard (57) will take on a more active role in the management.

Norwegian today reported its first quarter results. The quarter was characterized by reduced costs, increased revenue and significantly improved on-time performance. The net loss was NOK 1,489 million, while the company’s unit cost excluding fuel decreased by 8 per cent during the same period. The total revenue was NOK 8 billion, up 14 per cent.

Norwegian is today continuing to enhance the passenger experience by commencing the rollout of new and improved inflight Wi-Fi connectivity onboard the airline’s Boeing 737-800 fleet. Short-haul passengers will receive high-speed Wi-Fi fast enough to stream video content and the rollout will be completed on 113 Boeing 737-800 aircraft by mid-February 2019.

The closure some of Norwegian’s crew bases will have little or no effect on already scheduled flights that are out for sale and customers who have booked flights with Norwegian. Norwegian continues its work for a more sustainable aviation industry by signing a three-year contract with AVTECH Sweden AB. The agreement is based on a successful test project, which resulted in a reduced fuel consumption of 22 kilos per flight. This equals an annual CO2 reduction of 16,000 tons - or a reduction of 5,000 tons of fuel per year, which in turn leads to reduced costs for Norwegian.
