Press release -

Future Library handover ceremony in Oslo with author David Mithchell live on Facebook

Live on Facebook
The multi-award winning British novelist David Mitchell will hand over his text for the public art work Future Library at a forest ceremony in Oslo on Saturday the 28th of May 2016.

The ceremony will go live on https://www.facebook.com/VisitOslo/ at 11 am to 11.30 CET.

Remains secret until 2114
David Mitchell is the second writer to contribute to Future Library. The first writer was internationally renowned Canadian author Margaret Atwood and last year we saw the hand over of her text titled “Scribbler Moon”. Future Library is a public artwork by Scottish artist Katie Paterson that will unfold over 100 years in the city of Oslo, Norway. A thousand trees have been planted in Nordmarka, a forest just outside Oslo, which will supply paper for a special anthology of books to be printed in 100 years' time. Between now and then, one writer every year will contribute a text, with the writings held in trust, unpublished, until 2114.

All 100 manuscripts will be held in a specially designed room in the new Deichmanske Public Library opening in 2019 in Bjørvika, Oslo. No adult living today will ever know what is inside the boxes, other than that they are texts of some kind that will withstand the ravages of time and be technologically available in the year 2114.

An intimate ceremony
Mitchell will hand over his text during an early morning intimate ceremony in the middle of the Nordmarka forest. Coffee and chocolate will be served while wood fires burn.

Watch it live on https://www.facebook.com/VisitOslo/ at 11 am to 11.30 CET.
