RES Selected for CPS Energy and Southwest Research Institute Co-Located Solar & Energy Storage System

Press Release   •   Aug 22, 2018 09:07 GMT

Renewable Energy Systems (RES), a leader in the development, engineering, and construction of wind, solar, transmission, and energy storage projects in the Americas is pleased to announce the company has been selected by CPS Energy to construct an innovative solar and energy storage project to be located at 9800 W. Commerce in San Antonio, Texas. RES was selected through a competitive request for proposal (RFP) and has been awarded the engineering, procurement, construction, and maintenance of the facilities. Construction will begin in October 2018 with commercial operation in May 2019.

The CPS Energy solar and energy storage systems consist of 5 MWAC of distributed solar capacity co-located with a 10 MW/10 MWh RESolve lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This project takes an innovative approach in combining distributed solar generation with strategically sized and configured electrochemical energy storage, with both technologies interconnected at distribution voltage on a common feeder. Once operational, the system will allow for peak mid-day solar production to be stored and injected onto the grid in late afternoon and early evening, resulting in reduced reliance of fossil fuel generators to meet peak demand during these periods. This represents a scalable approach to meeting peak system electrical demand with lower emissions and increased flexibility. The project is among the first co-located solar and storage projects interconnected at the distribution level within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), and represents the 21st energy storage project for RES globally.

“RES is excited to partner with CPS Energy to construct a solar and energy storage project,” says Tom Duckett, RES Executive Vice President. “Having 3 GW of wind and 238 MW of solar already constructed or under construction in the state, this will mark RES’ first energy storage project in Texas and will utilize RES’ industry leading energy storage control platform, RESolve.”

“This is an important project that brings together solar and energy storage whose combination is a key enabler to achieve a zero emissions portfolio,” said Cris Eugster, CPS Energy Chief Operating Officer, “The project aligns with our Flexible Path strategy and gives us the opportunity to learn how to integrate these new technologies into our electric grid.”

As a leader in developing alternative energy and battery technologies, Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) will host the solar and energy storage systems on its 1,200-acre campus and help showcase the site as an example of energy innovation. “As beneficial as the site will be to the city’s energy future, SwRI will also benefit by leveraging the facility to become even more active in the grid-scale energy storage industry, and to work with battery suppliers and component manufacturers,” said Daniel Stewart, Vice President of the SwRI Powertrain Engineering Division.

Groundbreaking activities for the location in the highly visible Highway 151 corridor are tentatively scheduled for the fall of this year with commercial operation commencing by summer of 2019.
