M-Brain and HAAGA-HELIA University of Applied Sciences are together launching a competition titled M-Brain Challenge. The competition aims to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, and to develop the business skills of students. In the competition, HAAGA-HELIA’s multidisciplinary student teams will be challenged to develop new products and services using technology developed by M-Brain.
Teams participating in M-Brain Challenge, which will take place in the autumn of 2013, will be able to use the M-Adaptive technology platform in developing their product and service concepts. The platform, developed by M-Brain, will give the participants access to real-time global digital information, including social media services (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube).
Based on this business intelligence, the teams can brainstorm and develop new products, such as games or other applications, and new solutions for processing business information. The ideas will be executed using the Web Services API.
“M-Brain wants to participate in developing the interaction and cooperation between the business world and universities. Today, development of innovation, entrepreneurship and startup culture is of vital importance to our company as well as to the Finnish society as a whole. Gathering and processing information to support business is M-Brain’s core competence. We want to give students the opportunity to use our technology for developing new innovative products and services for both the consumer and enterprise markets,” says M-Brain’s CEO Tuomo Räsänen.
Cash prizes and opportunity to commercialize a concept
The competition will be carried out in three stages between September and November 2013. During the competition, teams will be coached by experts from HAAGA-HELIA and M-Brain. The ten best teams will present prototypes of their products or services in the competition final held in November. The teams will also have to draft a viable business plan for the commercialization of their concept.
The winning concepts will be selected specifically based on their innovativeness, commercialization potential, scalability, and technology utilization. The three best teams will be awarded significant cash prizes. In addition, they will be offered office space at M-Brain’s head office for six months, during which time they can develop their ideas in cooperation with M-Brain’s experts. During this time, M-Brain will also assess opportunities for setting up joint ventures around promising solutions.
“At HAAGA-HELIA, we focus especially on activities that combine business and learning. The Challenge competition that we are organizing with M-Brain is an example of our Softala™ Innovations service, which is a systematic model of giving our partner company and students an opportunity to create new product and service concepts as a part of studies. A natural next step for the competition participants could be, for instance, starting up their own business with the help of our StartUp School,” says Harri Palviainen, Director of the Information Technology Unit at HAAGA-HELIA.
