EPIC KICKSTARTER PROJECT
Shakespeare invented over 2000 words. This book covers every word along with its context – where it was first used in history.
William Shakespeare is perhaps the most well-known writer who’s ever lived. What is less well-known, is his contribution to the English language as we know it today.
400 years ago, there simply didn’t exist a word for “lonely”. So, Shakespeare did what any genius would do – he made it up.
Throughout his life he made up over 2,000 words. By changing nouns into verbs, verbs into adjectives, connecting words that had never been used together, adding prefixes, suffixes, and coming up with his own completely original words. Two–thirds of which can still be found in the Oxford English Dictionary.
WORDS by William Shakespeare – will cover every word that Shakespeare invented during his lifetime. These are just some of the words we can thank Shakespeare for: ADMIRABLE, OBSCENE, GENEROUS, BLUSHING, ELBOW, FASHIONABLE, UNREAL.
Each word will be show in the order it first appeared in Shakespeare’s works.
Along with the play, act, scene – and the first sentence it was ever used in.
We really think you’ll find this book “BEDAZZLED”, “MAJESTIC” and maybe even a bit “ADDICTIVE”.
