CASTROL EDGE REVEALS THE TITANIUM TRIALS

Castrol is unveiling Castrol EDGE boosted with TITANIUM Fluid Strength Technology™.

To mark the launch of its most technologically advanced and strongest motor oil yet, Castrol are proud to reveal The Titanium Trials, a series of high-powered, world-first challenges. True strength will be required to overcome intense driving scenarios, calling on man, machine and Castrol EDGE to perform in perfect sync and be Titanium strong.

For over 115 years Castrol has been at the forefront of incredible feats of human endeavour and engineering, playing an integral part of 21 land speed records, multiple space shuttle launches and Concorde’s first Mach2 flight.

Castrol is once more redefining the boundaries of oil strength and performance with the launch of Castrol EDGE boosted with TITANIUM FST™. The product doubles its strength against oil film breakdown and the unique titanium additive is proven to combat friction and reduce metal-to-metal contact that may critically damage engine components. Ultimately, this helps the engine deliver maximum performance. Leading physicists, chemists and engineers at Castrol’s Research & Development Centre in the UK were involved in the development of new Castrol EDGE with TITANIUM FST™. Their insatiable pursuit of a new paradigm of lubricant performance is led by a core team of 15 development engineers. The targets they set for the performance of new Castrol EDGE with TITANIUM FST™ exceeded the industry’s requirements and the standards required by many car manufacturers. The Titanium Trials express and harness this relentless spirit of innovation.

The first Castrol EDGE Titanium Trial of 2014 will be the Titanium Strong Blackout: A pitch black, state-of-the-art race track made entirely out of beams of light. The course is designed in four sections to accommodate a four-car relay, taking into account the different drivers and their vehicles to test the strength of man, machine and Castrol EDGE as they perform in sync like never before.

Highly skilled professional motorsport drivers have been recruited to undertake a course that will test every aspect of their driving skill. Castrol EDGE BMW DTM driver Augusto Farfus, Lamborghini test driver Adrian Zaugg and Audi’s 2013 DTM champion Mike Rockenfeller signed up for the Titanium Strong Blackout, a challenge that is unlike any they have ever faced. A fourth driver known around the world for audacious driving skill will be announced at the end of April, adding another dimension to the line-up.

As individuals each driver will have to master their own section of the Titanium Strong Blackout course, facing conditions and challenges that they have never conquered before – there will even be some world-firsts along the way. As a team, they will need to perform in perfect unison to beat the optimum lap time, a challenge that will demand that the drivers be Titanium Strong.

On taking part in the Trial, Augusto Farfus said: “I jumped at the chance to be involved when I heard about this epic challenge. I‘m looking forward to getting behind the wheel, putting my skills to the test on this unique course, and working with the others to prove we are Titanium Strong.”

In the coming weeks and months, Castrol EDGE will reveal more details about the first Trial, including the course design and the fourth driver. Every stage of the Titanium Strong Blackout can be followed on www.castroledge.com so that fans around the world can learn about the latest announcements and interact with the Trial as the tension mounts. The final footage of this ultimate test of motoring performance and strength will be revealed online at the end of May 2014.

Castrol EDGE with TITANIUM FST™, will be introduced in Europe and Africa from April 2014 onwards.

Notes for Editors: Castrol EDGE boosted with TITANIUM FST™: Technology Facts

The Development:

• 2,400 lubricant blends were created and tested to get exactly the right formulations; and

• The equivalent of 1.9 million miles (75 trips round the world) were covered during engine tests

The Case for a Strong Oil:

Today’s technology has allowed car manufacturers to produce smaller, yet more powerful and efficient engines. The aim is to deliver:

• Increased fuel economy

• Reduced emissions

• High performance

This has resulted in engine pressures almost doubling, which causes greater stress on the oil.

• The pressures experienced are up to 10,000kg per square centimetre

• These pressures are equivalent to five cars stacked on a stiletto heel

Engines have become more sophisticated with design features, such as direct injection and supercharging. The result of these design features is greater engine pressure, which increases the stress on the oil.

Every single moving part of the engine relies on the oil to keep metal surfaces apart, which is why an oil that is proven to be strong and proven to remain strong is required.

Castrol EDGE boosted with TITANIUM FST™ our strongest oils:

• Castrol EDGE boosted with TITANIUM FST™ doubles its film strength

• Prevents oil film breakdown

• Reduces friction to help maximize engine performance

The Strength to Push the Boundaries:

Castrol EDGE boosted with TITANIUM FST™ has the strength to respond to the pressures experienced in modern engines. Castrol EDGE is now titanium strong and is ready to perform however the driver and engine demand.
