Empower modernises Fingrid's substation in Alajärvi

The main grid company Fingrid Oyj and Empower PN Oy have signed an agreement concerning the overall implementation of the modernisation of the Alajärvi substation. The Alajärvi substation is a significant node in power distribution, through which power is transmitted to southern and northern Finland.

“The Alajärvi substation is one of the key nodes in the main grid. The new 400 kV duplex busbar scheme to be built will enable an excellent availability and reliability of the main grid. In the construction phase, we have secured occupational safety and minimised interruptions in distribution by building the 400 kV switching station in a new location next to the current substation area,” says Kari Kuusela, Executive Vice President at Fingrid.

“We are happy to be able to support Fingrid's network investment strategy through this important project. This transaction further strengthens Empower's position as one of the leading substation operators in Finland,” says Timo Kiiveri, President of Empower PN Oy.

The substation modernisation project includes the replacement of the 400 kV switching station, the expansion of the 110 kV switching station and the construction of a new switching station building, including its secondary 400/110/20 kV circuit systems. In addition, Empower will dismantle any systems to be removed from use.

Construction work will be started in spring 2016 and the project will be completed in October 2017.The value of the agreement signed in January 2016 is approximately EUR 7.5 million.
