Marathon reading of Island of the Doomed at the Gothenburg Book Fair

In the spirit of Stig Dagerman, the University of Gävle goes against the grain at the Gothenburg Book Fair. In an environment where everything is to be brief, fast and new, a marathon reading is performed of one on the hardest texts one can grapple with: Stig Dagerman’s novel Island of the Doomed.

“I don’t want to be on the island of the doomed, but I am drawn there,” Bengt Söderhäll says. Together with Stina Oscarsson, he is the initiator of the reading.

“It’s a completely necessary text of our time, a message from 1946 which sings, irritates, quarrels, inquires, dances and tries,” Stina adds.

Moreover, in collaboration with Stadsteatern at Gothenburg, a reading will be performed of Dagerman’s play The Shadow of Mart on Saturday night on the 30th of September. It will be followed by a conversation.

Lo Dagerman, Yukkiko Duke, Nancy Pick and Bengt Söderhäll will participate together with the actors Henrik Bergström, Susanne Harju Genty, Samuel Jerrick and Mika Oskarsson-Kindstrand. Stina Oscarsson is artistic director for the reading and leads the conversation.

Flipped Classroom

Parallel to the marathon reading, The University of Gävle will spread knowledge about net- based learning of the future. The University’s booth (B 06:69) will be constructed as a “Flipped Classroom” to visualise how modern classrooms can look and function, with a focus on increased student participation and laboratory activities.

The university has a long experience of distance learning. To renew distance learning, new demands are made on rooms, IT-tools, teacher competence and teacher support.

“We would like to share our experience and competence within the fields of method and technology with more people. The Book Fair reaches many people, and many are teachers. Come and visit us in booth B 06:69,” Maivor Hallén says.
