Nawal El Saadawi is appointed honorary doctor at the University of Gävle

Nawal El Saadawi, Egyptian author, has been appointed honorary doctor at the University of Gävle. She will receive the mark of honor at an academic ceremony later this spring.

Nawal El Saadawi,
born 1931, is one of the most respected amongst the Arabic speaking female
authors. Her literature is well spread all over the world and she has received
many awards, among them the Stig Dagerman award in 2012. She has also been
nominated for the Nobel Prize in literature.

The lifework is connected to the Vision of the University.
Nawal El Saadawi’s lifework and struggle for women’s rights is strongly connected to
the vision of the University of Gävle – For a sustainable living environment.

 Nawal El Saadawi is an educated doctor and has been responsible for public health matters in Egypt. She is a well known advocate of the free word and a front figure of the women’s movement in the Arab nation that has periodically been forced into exile.

The Dagerman award 2012. When she was awarded the Dagerman award 2012 Nawal El
Saadawi visited the University of Gävle. She inaugurated the by the time newly
established Dagerman seminar together with Stig Dagerman’s son Réne Dagerman,
the chairman of the Dagerman association Arne Ruth and the vice-chancellor of
the University Maj-Britt Johansson. The Dagerman-seminar is aimed towards
honoring Stig Dagermans memory and to strengthen the University’s literary and
humanistic activities.

Academic Ceremony. Nawal El Saadawi will receive her mark of honor
at the university’s academic ceremony April the 25th at the Gävle concert hall
together with an additional two newly appointed honorary doctors, Arne
Ljungkvist doctor and professor, founder of the Professor Arne Ljungqvist Anti-doping
Foundation and one of the front figures in the work with anti-doping and also
Per Laurell CEO of Gävle Energi.
