Stephen Barthel Awarded Environmental Prize of the Year
Stephen Barthel has been awarded the Environmental Prize for 2016. He received the award from the Vice-Chancellor at the 40-year Jubilee of University of Gävle on 19 May. Stephen is a reader in geospatial information science with a specialisation in spatial planning at the University of Gävle.
Why he is awarded the prize
The selection is motivated in the following words: “Senior Lecturer Stephen Barthel, who in ground-breaking and interdisciplinary manners combines ecological, economic and social sustainability in his research on sustainable spatial planning. Stephan is a researcher for the future and a great asset in the University’s work for a sustainable human living environment.”
“it feels good. It means that I am on the right track and can keep going. And that I get funding so that I can go to a conference that I have been planning on attending,” Stephan Barthel says.
Stephan Barthel
Stephan Barthel has worked at the University of Gävle for one year and a half and also works at Stockholm Resilience Centre. He has a degree in natural resource management and physical geography. As a graduate student, he investigated the management of green spaces and, above all, the role of civil society.
“I would like to thank those who nominated me for this prize. I would like to thank all who work here, the members of staff have received me in a very friendly way, above all the members of staff at geospatial information science and environmental psychology. Members of staff have been very welcoming. It is slightly unique, I think, for a university. The welcome had not been as warm at Stockholm University,” Stephan Barthel says.
“I like it here.”
Environmental Prize of the Year
The Environmental Prize of the Year is awarded a member of staff who, during the last year, has contributed greatly in promoting the University’s role in sustainable development and the University’s environmental work.
The award consists of a diploma and 15 000 SEK to be used for continuing professional development according to the statues of the award.

Research Profiles
Built Environment and Health-promoting Working Life are the general research profiles of the higher education institution. Important parts included are Spatial Planning with a specialisation in Sustainable Built Environment and Musculoskeletal Disorders with the purpose to prevent work-related injuries. In 2010, the higher education institution received permission to carry out third-cycle programmes in the profile area of Built Environment.
The higher education institution has applied for permission to carry out third-cycle programmes in technology, humanities and social sciences.
