Stockholm identified as tech talent magnet

New report from LinkedIn and City of Stockholm shows the capital is a net beneficiary of international and national talent, especially of front-end IT skills. 

Stockholm has unique access to high in-demand front-end technology skills and is a net beneficiary of international and national talent. This is according to a report that City of Stockholm and LinkedIn release today. The city is also gaining key specialist skills from abroad: the number of immigrants with skills in fashion and apparel, mechanical and aerospace engineering and mobile and game development have significantly added to the existing talent pool over the past year.  

The report is presented at Stockholm Business Region headquarters today by LinkedIn together with Karin Wanngård, Mayor of Stockholm and Anna Gissler, CEO of Stockholm Business Region Development. It marks the first time a Swedish government organization will use LinkedIn’s unique and real time data to inform labour force skills investment and education.

 - We have claimed for a long time that Stockholm is an international tech hub to be reckoned with, and this report proves it’s true. Stockholm continues to have incredible traction with IT skills far above the global average, and particularly when it comes to skills that are in high demand internationally such as development and programming, says Karin Wanngård, Mayor of Stockholm. 

The report is the result of an in-depth analysis LinkedIn has done of the labour market in Stockholm. The findings show Stockholm is an economic hub for tech talent and provides new insights into the impact on skills in the area:

• Talent is primarily moving into Stockholm from Uppsala, the US, the UK, and India.
• Skillsets Stockholm is gaining from abroad include fashion and apparel, mechanical and aerospace engineering, game development, and C/C++.
• The top-ten list of unique skills for Stockholm include user interface, telecommunications technology and game development, meaning they are more likely to appear in Stockholm than elsewhere in Europe.
• Perl/Python/Ruby, statistical analysis and data mining, and Java programming are among the top-ten most in-demand skills in Stockholm.
• Stockholm-based members are internationally most connected to people in London, New York, Oslo and Copenhagen.

- This report tells us that the skills that are most in demand by employers in Stockholm, particularly on the tech side, are also well represented in the capital. Obviously a healthy match between supply and demand of talent is essential to keep this region growing, says Anna Gissler, CEO of Stockholm Business Region Development.

At the end of last year, the City of Stockholm launched together with the region’s leading tech companies, the initiative Move to Stockholm with the goal of attracting tech talent. This data will be used to better target people with the in-demand skills in Stockholm.

- We believe that our data, clearly showing what the in-demand skills are and pin-pointing any skills gaps, can support the region by informing labour force skills investment and education, ensuring that Stockholm continues to attract and retain the skills it needs, says Lisa Gunnarsson, Head of LTS, LinkedIn Nordics. 

To understand the labour market dynamic, LinkedIn examined the aggregated profile information of its almost half a million members within the Stockholm region, looking specifically at four key factors: workforce and skills, hiring, labour mobility, and education.
